I grew up in Warwick, Rhode Island and lived there until I went off to college in Worcester, Massachusetts. I started my first job on my 14th birthday, and haven’t really been unemployed since. Like most Americans, I have rarely travelled outside the US, and even when I travelled in the US it was only for a weeks’ vacation here and there. Traveling and vacations were always something that I saw as expensive and never seemed to have enough time to really experience.
After working for 23 years, I decided it was time to break away from the daily grind and try something new. In April 2013, I left my job and started planning for a 4 month backpacking trip in Europe. Since I hadn’t been anywhere in Europe at that point, I thought it would be fun to let my friends, family, and former co-workers vote on where I went along the way.
I started this website to chronicle my year abroad (and make it easy for people to vote) as I trek around Europe, South America, New Zealand, Australia, and Southeast Asia. The site has two goals:
1. Document my experiences while traveling abroad (mostly for the first time)
2. Share tips and tricks along the way, making it easier for other folks to take the plunge themselves when the time is right
Over time the goals may change, as life does, but for now it’s a living journal that will capture my (mostly) first-time travel experiences in different countries and cultures.
